An existing customer had admired our previous chessboards and commissioned us to make one for his nephew. The customer had high standards and a large budget and we relished the opportunity to create something really unique!
The side panels took inspiration from end grain chopping boards, the laminated posts drew from our experience with the epoxy night lamp that we had just made.
The timbers were Purple Heart and Maple which contrast beautifully especially with the gold epoxy inlay between the chess squares.
Carpentry at this scale demands very fine tolerances and we even managed to include miniature wedge mortice and tenon joints to satisfy the traditional carpenter but with modern soft closing ball bearing drawer runners for smooth operation of the drawers
